The Interview

There will always be an interview whether you pursue the Fulbright or a program. It could be over phone, video call, or in person. This post (based on research, because I haven't had an interview of my own) will cover the basic questions to expect in an interview to land a grant/job teaching English abroad and general tips.

Basic questions you should prepare to answer:

  • Why do you want to teach English abroad?
  • What is your interest in x country?
  • What are your qualifications/teaching experiences?
  • How would you deal with a misbehaving student?
  • Do you have any questions for us?*
And tips!
  • Do your research for the above questions (no-brainer!) You could have them drafted out if you have a phone or video call.
  • Make sure your voicemail sounds professional in case you miss a call
  • Be honest
    • If you're thrown a situation question that you don't know how to answer, respond to it as much as you can and acknowledge that you are eager to learn how to remedy the situation! It's also good to portray yourself as someone who will admit to and is ready to learn.
      * Almost all interviews will end with this question. And it is so easy to say no, but if you have a valid question to ask, then it will show your interest in the position.
For teaching abroad specifically, you could ask about the group of students you will be teaching, school placement, whether you will have assistance/training, or the school policy.
